Reasons for Dark Spots on the Teeth
There are numerous issues that can cause dark spots or discoloration to appear on your teeth. Some are relatively benign, while others require treatment to prevent further damage or even eventual tooth loss. Common causes of dark spots include:
- Tooth decay
- Staining from food or other substances
- Injury to the interior of the tooth
Tooth decay can cause small dark spots in its early stages, or larger spots if the decay is not diagnosed and treated promptly. Staining can affect either the surface of the teeth or deeper layers, depending upon its cause. Injury to the tooth could lead to tooth loss if it is not treated. Damage to the pulp of the tooth can cause visible dark spots. Your tooth could also turn black if the pulp has suffered necrosis due to severe decay or injury.
If you suspect tooth decay or injury, you should see your dentist as soon as possible. Discoloration can be treated at home or professionally at your dentist’s office.
Treatment for Dark Spots on the Teeth
If your tooth is affected by surface staining, teeth whitening will help reduce the stains and restore your teeth to their natural color. Your dentist can provide whitening treatment in the office, or give you a take-home kit to use over a period of about two weeks.
If your teeth are suffering from decay, your dentist will removed the decayed areas and restore your teeth with a filling or crown depending upon the severity of the decay and your specific needs.
If your tooth has been injured and the pulp is damaged or infected, a root canal treatment might be necessary. Heavily damaged or necrotic pulp tissue can lead to the loss of your tooth if you do not seek treatment.
