Dental trauma is a common problem, and can lead to the loss of permanent teeth. However, if you see your dentist promptly after suffering dental trauma, she might be able to save the tooth. Being prepared and knowing what to do in the case of damage to your teeth are important ways to increase the odds of saving your tooth.
What to Do in Case of Dental Trauma
Dental trauma usually occurs in the case of an accident, such as a fall or a motor vehicle accident. It can also happen as a result of a blow to the face or from an incident while participating in a contact sport. Whether the damage is to your teeth, lips, tongue, or face, it’s important to know what to do.
As with any injury, you should administer first aid and visit a doctor or dentist as soon as possible if injuries are serious. Special precautions to take in the case of dental injuries include:
- Preserve any knocked-out teeth, placing them in a cup of water or milk
- Use gauze to stop bleeding
- Use toothpaste or denture adhesive to temporarily reattach dislodged fillings or crowns
You can prepare for dental injuries by adding a few items to your regular first aid kit, including extra gauze, a special kit or a regular small cup to preserve a knocked-out tooth, and a tube of toothpaste or denture adhesive.
Preventing Dental Trauma
It’s also important to do all you can to prevent dental injuries in the first place. Some precautions you can take include:
- Wearing a mouthguard during contact sports
- Always wear a seatbelt when driving
- Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle
- Wear appropriate footwear on slippery or uneven surfaces
You can wear an over-the-counter mouthguard, but the best protection comes from one that’s custom-made by your dentist. Make sure your bike or motorcycle helmet fits properly, and also be sure to wear a helmet if you are horseback riding. Avoiding falls and accidents, and taking all necessary precautions, will help protect you from serious dental trauma and possible tooth loss.
