Teeth whitening is one of the most common and easiest cosmetic dentistry treatments. If your teeth are stained or discolored, whitening can make a dramatic difference, improving your look, increasing your self-confidence, and giving you a bright, white smile you can be proud of.
What You Can Expect from Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is a relatively simple process, but it can provide dramatic results. After only an hour in the dentist’s chair, you’ll see dramatic changes, and your teeth will continue to look whiter over the next several days. You can expect these results to last a few months. If you’re careful to avoid staining agents like coffee, tea, and cigarettes, they could last even longer.
In order to maintain the results of your teeth whitening, you should also see our cosmetic dentist every few months for touchup treatments. These treatments won’t take as long as your initial whitening, but will help your teeth look bright and white for several months.
The Teeth Whitening Process
Whitening is one of the simplest, fastest, and least expensive techniques in cosmetic dentistry. It only takes about an hour, and is performed in our dentist’s office. Dr. Daggula will apply a protective gel to your gums and use a plastic appliance to protect your mouth and tongue. She will then apply the whitening agent—a professional-strength bleach—to the front surfaces of your teeth. The whitener is sometimes activated with a special light, which allows it to penetrate deeper into the tooth enamel. It is left on for about twenty minutes, then reapplied two more times for the best results.
Whitening is safe and easy, and has very few side effects. You might find your teeth slightly more sensitive after whitening treatments, especially if you have them whitened on a regular basis. This sensitivity often diminishes over time. You can use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth if it bothers you. If you have very stubborn stains, our dentist might recommend a take-home kit, which you’ll use for about two weeks.
