If you are unhappy with your appearance due to stained or damaged teeth, a consultation with your cosmetic dentist will demonstrate how you can enhance your smile in a matter of weeks. Veneers provide a permanent solution for many dental maladies.
How do veneers work?
Veneers are wafer thin, tooth colored shells that are made to match surrounding untreated teeth.
The process begins by your cosmetic dentist removing a very thin amount of enamel from the front of teeth to be treated. By removing enamel (about the thickness of the veneer), treated teeth will fit in with neighboring teeth.
If porcelain is the material chosen, the patient will enjoy a stain resistant, very natural smile as porcelain reflects light for a seamless appearance. Once enamel is removed, dental impressions are taken for the dental lab to fabricate veneers. Temporaries will protect teeth until permanent veneers can be delivered.
Since porcelain is stain resistant, it will not react to teeth whitening so if the patient is entertaining teeth whitening, this should be completed first so veneers will match your new lightened shade.
What can veneers improve?
Dental stain – Deep intrinsic stain may be difficult to eradicate; porcelain veneers can be used to cover one or multiple teeth that are affected by discoloration or spotting.
Chipped enamel – When teeth suffer from a break or chip, veneers can cover those teeth.
Uneven or misaligned teeth – You can substitute years of orthodontic treatment by treating teeth with veneers.
Teeth suffering from wear and tear or diminished enamel can benefit from porcelain veneers.
After Treatment Care
Once veneers are in place, your cosmetic dentist will caution you against biting into hard or chewy foods with treated teeth. If a veneer should break, it is likely going to require replacement. You can continue to enjoy many foods; just cut them into pieces for consumption instead of biting into them directly.
Patients who grind their teeth will want to protect their investment with a mouthguard.
Brush and floss daily; and visit our dentist every six months for cleaning and exam. At each dental visit, Dr. Daggula will inspect veneers to help ensure you will enjoy your stunning smile for many years.
