With their non-invasive nature and their highly versatile usability, veneers are a popular answer to a number of cosmetic dentistry issues. They can be used to correct the look of many surface problems without requiring extensive restructuring of the underlying tooth.
Treatment with Veneers
Having your teeth treated with veneers is a relatively simple process. Our dentist will probably use a two-step process in which the teeth are first prepared to make room for the veneers, then the final, custom-made restorations are put in place at a second appointment. In the interim, you’ll have temporary veneers affixed to your teeth to protect them. When your permanent veneers arrive, the temporaries are removed and the new ones are put in place and secured with a strong adhesive.
A veneer is very thin—the porcelain is about the thickness of a fingernail. This means only a very small layer of enamel must be removed from the tooth to make room for them. In some cases, the veneer itself is so thin it can be affixed directly to the tooth surface. In this case, no preparation is necessary.
What Types of Problems Can Benefit from Veneers?
This type of cosmetic treatment addresses aesthetic problems with the front surfaces of the teeth. This can include issues like:
- Pitted or cracked tooth surfaces
- Intrinsic discoloration
- Surface staining that does not respond to teeth whitening
- Misshapen teeth
- Slight misalignment or gaps
You and our dentist will decide together what the appropriate treatment is for your specific needs. In some cases a different treatment might work better for you. If this is the case, you’ll discuss this with our dentist and decide on the best approach to address your goals. For example, if your teeth are misaligned or have gaps between them, it might be better to have orthodontic treatment to correct your bite rather than disguising the problems with veneers. However, if the misalignment is very minor, a cosmetic solution might be sufficient.
