If you have stains on your teeth, there are several ways to treat them. Some people use at-home whitening systems or whitening toothpastes to reduce the appearance of discoloration. The most effective treatment, though, is in-office teeth whitening supplied by our dentist.
Whitening Toothpaste and How It Works
There are several types of whitening toothpastes. The most common include ingredients like baking soda that gently polish the tooth surfaces to reduce the appearance of stains. Some also include hydrogen peroxide, a bleaching agent, or other ingredients that help remove, reduce, or disguise staining.
Whitening toothpaste is safe and can be an effective approach to teeth whitening. You’ll get the best results from this type of toothpaste if your staining is not very serious, and if you’re willing to wait for your results. Treating stains with toothpaste can take some time, as the whitening or polishing agents only occur in very small quantities.

Teeth Whitening with Our Dentist
The most effective way to whiten your teeth is to have our dentist apply a professional-strength whitening treatment to your teeth in her office. This method of dramatically whitening your teeth is very efficient and also very safe. A strong bleaching agent is applied to the tooth surfaces and left for about twenty minutes. Some types of whitening agent must be activated with a special light. The dentist typically applies the agent in three twenty-minute sessions, so the full treatment lasts about an hour.
Teeth whitening is most effective on stains that affect the surfaces of the teeth. This includes stains made by:
- Coffee
- Tea
- Nicotine
- Other dark-colored foods or beverages
If the discoloration on your teeth does not respond well to this type of whitening treatment, ask our dentist about a take-home treatment. This also uses a professional strength whitening treatment, but you apply the whitener at home using custom-made trays. This type of treatment usually takes about two weeks. You’re likely to see results in the first few days.
